The "face combination" is the most critical decision in mechanical seal design. If you choose the wrong pair, the seal faces will either wear out in days or stick together and crack under pressure.

Many maintenance teams rely on "what we’ve always used," but for modern industrial pumps, material selection should be dynamic. Here is a breakdown of the three heavyweights—Silicon Carbide (SiC), Tungsten Carbide (TC), and Carbon—and when to use each.

1. The Material Breakdown

  • Carbon (Resin-Impregnated): The "soft" standard. Carbon acts as the self-lubricating partner in almost every seal pair. It is forgiving, runs cool, and handles dry-running better than any metal or ceramic.

  • Silicon Carbide (SiC): The "all-rounder." Exceptionally hard, highly corrosion-resistant, and manages heat well. It is the go-to for general-purpose process pumps.

  • Tungsten Carbide (TC): The "tough guy." Extremely dense and impact-resistant. It is the preferred choice for high-pressure applications where ceramic faces might risk brittle failure.

2. Choosing the Best Pair (Face Combinations)

General Purpose. Low-to-medium pressure, standard chemicals. Excellent lubrication.

SiC vs. SiC

Abrasive Media. When the fluid contains solids (sand, lime, paper pulp), you need two hard faces.

High Pressure / Sticky Fluids. Used when pressure is too high for SiC to handle or when the fluid is highly viscous.

3. Which one should you pick?

  • Pick Carbon/SiC if you want the longest life for clean fluids. The carbon is "sacrificial," meaning it wears slowly to protect the more expensive SiC ring.

  • Pick SiC/SiC if your pump handles slurries or abrasive particles.

  • Pick Carbon/TC if your application involves high pressure or severe thermal shock, where the impact toughness of Tungsten Carbide prevents ring cracking.

FAQ: Material Selection Tips

Q1: Can I use SiC/SiC in every pump?

A: Technically yes, but it’s often overkill. SiC/SiC requires excellent lubrication. If you have a clean process fluid, Carbon/SiC will always run cooler and quieter.

Q2: When does Carbon fail?

A: Carbon is sensitive to temperature and chemical compatibility. If you are pumping strong oxidizers (like bleach or nitric acid), standard carbon will blister or dissolve. Always check the chemical compatibility chart for your Carbon grade.

Q3: Is Tungsten Carbide (TC) better than SiC?

A: Not necessarily. TC is heavier and more susceptible to corrosion in certain chemicals. Use TC primarily when you need high impact strength (e.g., handling rapid pressure spikes).
