In a high-capacity pulp mill or a chemical processing plant, the clock is your most expensive enemy. When a Sulzer® APP or Ahlstar pump goes down due to a seal leak, the cost isn't just the price of the replacement part—it’s the lost production, the labor hours, and the risk of an incorrect installation.
For many maintenance teams, the biggest bottleneck is the transition from old-fashioned "component seals" to modern "cartridge seals." At FBU Sealing Technology, our 2200 series is designed to solve this exact problem, reducing your Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) significantly.
Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) is a critical KPI for any world-class maintenance department. It is calculated as:
MTTR=Total Number of Repairs∑(Total Maintenance Time)
When you use component seals (individual faces, springs, and O-rings), your MTTR sky-rockets because of the precision required for setting the working length, aligning the faces, and ensuring no contamination enters the sealing chamber.
The "Old Way" (Component Seals) | The FBU Way (Cartridge 2200 Series) |
|---|---|
High Risk: Requires manual measurement of the shaft sleeve and stuffing box. | Zero Error: Pre-assembled and pre-set at our Suzhou factory. |
Time Consuming: Often takes 3–5 hours for a complete changeout. | Rapid Fit: Usually installed in under 45 minutes. |
Contamination: Faces are exposed to dust and oil during installation. | Protected: Faces are enclosed in a housing until the pump starts. |
Testing: You only know it works after you start the pump. | Verified: 100% pressure tested before it leaves our facility. |
As your technical partner, we’ve optimized the FBU 2210 (Single) and FBU 2240 (Double) series to be "plug-and-play" replacements for Sulzer® systems.
Stationary Spring Design: By moving the springs out of the rotating media and onto the stationary side, we prevent "spring clogging"—a major cause of premature failure in paper stock.
Universal Gland Fit: Our cartridge glands are designed to fit the standard bolt patterns of Sulzer® stuffing boxes perfectly, meaning no drilling or modifications are required.
Self-Aligning Faces: The internal mechanism of the 2200 series automatically compensates for slight shaft misalignments, ensuring the fluid film stays stable from the moment of startup.
1.Do I still need to measure the shaft position for an FBU Cartridge seal?
No. That’s the beauty of the design. The cartridge is locked in the correct working position by centering clips. Once the seal is bolted to the gland and the sleeve is locked to the shaft, you simply remove the clips, and the seal is perfectly set.
2.Can I repair an FBU Cartridge seal myself?
Yes. Unlike many OEM brands that force you to buy a new unit, FBU provides high-quality repair kits. However, for critical service, we recommend sending the unit back to our technical center for professional refurbishment and re-testing.
3.Is it worth upgrading from a component seal to a cartridge seal for older pumps?
Absolutely. The savings in labor costs and the reduction in "infant mortality" (seals that leak immediately due to installation error) usually pay for the upgrade in a single maintenance cycle.
