Most pump seal failures are not sudden. A seal that passes a pressure test on Monday can be leaking by the following month, and the pump has usually been sending signals the whole time. The signals are small. Vibration edges up by a fraction. Bearing temperature climbs a few degrees. A thin film of product appears at the gland. Power draw shifts. None of these looks like an emergency on its own. The readings become the new normal.
Rotating equipment rarely jumps from healthy to failed. The decline is gradual. Faces wear, springs take a set, flush flow drops, alignment creeps. Each change is minor until several line up. By the time the leak is visible, the seal has often been outside its design window for weeks. The metal and the elastomer go through every hour of that slow change, even when the logbook shows nothing.
Operators and maintenance crews work around what they see every shift. A faint hum becomes background noise. A warm bearing becomes the pump that always runs warm. Crews accept the present reading and skip the comparison with a known good baseline. The machine absorbs the slow change, and the record stays empty. A failure that seems sudden is usually a trend nobody plotted.
Four measured values cover most early seal problems. Each is cheap to log and expensive to ignore.
Vibration. Rising amplitude points to misalignment, cavitation or worn bearings that load the seal and disturb face contact.
Bearing temperature. A steady climb signals lubrication loss or load change before the metal fails, and a hot bearing cooks the seal close by.
Leak rate at the gland. The earliest direct evidence of face wear or flush loss, visible long before a flood.
Power draw. Efficiency loss from internal clearance or throttling shows here first, often before any other symptom.
A logged baseline turns a vague comment about a pump sounding off into a measured trend. A 15 percent rise in vibration against last quarter's number is a reason to act, not a guess. Planned work replaces emergency teardown. Crews review the seal while the faces still have life, and the next failure comes later.

Log the four numbers on a schedule while the pump is new or freshly serviced.
Set a review threshold for each parameter. One trip point misses the slow drift.
Compare each reading to the baseline. Yesterday's noise is a weak reference.
Act on the trend. One spike rarely justifies a teardown.
