A seal runs three years on clean water and dies in three months in pulp black liquor. The seal did not change. The face material did not match the medium. On the floor this gets blamed on the brand, the price, the install. The faces rarely get the first look.
What decides how long a seal lives is the pair of faces rubbing together, not the nameplate on the pump.
Reaction-bonded silicon carbide is built for dirty service. Gritty, fibrous, abrasive media that grooves carbon graphite in weeks barely wears it. Pulp black liquor, slurry, lime slurry run on it.
Carbon graphite against a hard mate is the default for clean duty. Water, light oil, mild solvent, it is enough and cheaper. In black liquor the fibers load up, the surface strips layer by layer, the leak shows fast. People call it universal. It is not. It fears abrasion, not pressure.
Tungsten carbide holds heavy slurry and shrugs off shock. The cost is brittleness, a bad shock load cracks it, and the price. Not unusable. Just cost the trade before you fit it.
Match the face pair and seal life moves by an order of magnitude. Not a tweak.
FBU builds two seals for pulp and heavy abrasive duty. The EDMH is a rotary-pusher cartridge with the face pair matched to black liquor abrasion, shipped preset. The ESMH serves the same pulp and paper duty in a stationary build for tight stuffing boxes. Both move face selection into the design stage instead of leaving it to the site.
Set abrasion first. Carbon graphite for clean, silicon carbide for grit and fiber, tungsten carbide for heavy slurry. Get this wrong and the rest does not matter.
Check temperature and the mating pair next. SiC on SiC holds extreme duty, SiC on carbon graphite is the general combo. Rising temperature reopens the pair choice.
Match the chamber and space last. EDMH on standard pulp chambers, ESMH on tight ones. Do not force the wrong build.
Next teardown with a face full of grooves, do not rush to a new brand. Look at the medium. Look at whether the faces were ever paired right.
How do you choose mechanical seal face material?
By medium abrasiveness. Clean media use carbon graphite against a hard mate, abrasive media use reaction-bonded silicon carbide, heavy slurry calls for tungsten carbide. The wrong pair can shorten seal life by an order of magnitude.
What service uses reaction-bonded silicon carbide seal faces?
Dirty, gritty, or fibrous media such as pulp black liquor, slurry, and lime slurry. Carbon graphite grooves in weeks there, while silicon carbide wears far slower.
Why does carbon graphite fail fast in black liquor?
Fibers and solids in black liquor load and strip the graphite surface, the faces lose flatness, and leakage follows. Carbon graphite fears abrasion, not pressure, and clean duty is its home.
